Calligraph is a typical Designer Pinwheel quilt based on a four-fold rotation of a tessellated right triangle. Hand-painted and dyed solid color silk dupioni and charmeuse fabrics gave the original quilt a satiny quality with unusual color.

The pattern is for one full-scale tessellated triangle only. Cut and piece the pattern’s patches four times to complete the quilt top. Add seam allowances to all patches. The quilt finishes at 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″, or you may use the pattern to build a larger quilt from multiple blocks–try reversing the pattern so shapes align.

Dashed lines on the pattern indicate suggested quilting lines in addition to stitch-in-the-ditch used to define each patch in the quilt.

The pattern makes a quilt 27″ x 27″. The pattern is for one full-scale tessellated triangle only. Cut and piece the pattern’s patches four times to complete the quilt top. Add seam allowances to all patches.

Dashed lines on the pattern indicate suggested quilting lines (better than in the original quilt!) in addition to stitch-in-the-ditch used to define each patch in the quilt.

There are no unnecessary seam lines in Designer Pinwheels quilts; every seam involves a fabric/color change.

Supplies needed to make this quilt top:

• Small amounts of a variety of solid color fabrics
• Freezer paper or fusible (iron-on) interfacing to make the pattern and serve as a sewing guide, 30″ x 30″ (recommended products Pellon 911FF or Vilene H250)

This is a pattern to make a quilt panel and not an actual quilt.

This pattern is ideally suited for machine quilting. For those of you, who would rather appliqué by hand, please remember to add your seam allowance when tracing the templates.

Not included the instructions for making and finishing a quilt. This pattern can be used to create a panel and you can add borders of your choice.

I prefer making this on a white fabric with a wavy green patch at the bottom. But you can make it in any background of your choice.
